Tam McLaughlin is a Partner at Duxton Hill. He acts for corporates, boards and individuals in complex, high-stakes matters where civil recovery, internal investigation and regulatory exposure frequently arise together, and where discretion and judgment matter as much as technical skill. His practice spans fraud, foreign bribery, corruption and financial misconduct across Australia and the Asia-Pacific.
Clients value Tam’s ability to combine advisory, investigative and advocacy skills in a single engagement. Having conducted financial investigations from inception and carried them through to litigation and prosecution, he brings a rare end-to-end perspective to matters that are often cross-border and document-intensive.
His expertise is grounded in nearly two decades across the public and private sectors. As Principal Lawyer at Victoria’s Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC), he appeared as counsel assisting in public and private examinations and advised the Commissioner and Executive on the use of coercive powers and the conduct of prosecutions. Before that, he spent close to a decade at the Australian Federal Police as both lawyer and financial investigator, contributing to Australia’s first successful foreign bribery prosecution, leading money laundering investigations into transnational organised crime, and recovering criminal assets concealed through corporate structures, trusts and offshore accounts.
Selected experience
- Acting for an international power company in recovering EUR 13 million misappropriated through a business email compromise fraud.
- Advising a European parent company on an investigation into alleged misconduct by a senior executive of its Australian subsidiary.
- Representing a contractor on a major State infrastructure project in responding to allegations of fraudulent invoicing, including the associated regulatory, forensic and reputational issues.
- Contributing to Australia’s first successful foreign bribery prosecution, at the Australian Federal Police.
